The Most Isolated City in the World?
The most isolated city in the world? That's Perth, Western Australia. It is, however, a very modern city. To the south there is a spectacular coastline, vineyards and wineries, giant karri forests, tingle trees and some of the tallest trees in the world as well as mountains whose colours change throughout the day. Many of the beaches, such as Smiths Beach - Yallingup, Middleton Beach - Albany, and Ocean Beach - Denmark, are very popular with surfers and body boarders. In the Spring there are wonderful displays of wildflowers in the southern meadows. To the north of Perth is a huge area containing national parks like the Kalbarri National Park and the Nambung National Park where there is the extraordinary Pinnacles Desert. Towards the interior of Western Australia lie the Great Sandy and Gibson Deserts, vast tracts of hostile terrain. The city of Perth, capital of Western Australia, has 80% of the State population in an area of more than two and a half million square miles. It is so far from Sydney that the Indian Pacific rail trip from Perth to Sydney will take you three days. It covers 2,700 miles and it crosses the Nullarbor Plain where there is the world's longest stretch of straight railway track. |
